Education & Awareness

Nature Kenya carries out Environmental Education at different sites in the country working together with Site Support Groups to create awareness on the importance of the environment, ecosystem benefits and the link between the natural resources and sustainable livelihoods. The awareness programme helps the target groups (Local communities, school going children, public and visitors) to understand sustainable use and management of natural resources, climate change impacts and mitigation and participatory resource management and how to co-exist sustainably with nature.  The programme nurtures skills, knowledge, values, attitudes and change in behaviour, bringing up environmental responsible citizens who care and protect the environment, thus, instilling a sense of environmental responsibility in our citizens.

The Conservation Environmental Education programme will strive to Strategic objectives/results:

  • Increase and enhance public awareness, knowledge and participation on environmental conservation within local communities, school children and the general public
  • Create awareness on the link between biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods and the importance of ecosystem services in improving the quality of lives
  • Mainstream environmental issues into school curriculum and school children involved in environmental education especially at ecologically sensitive areas and Important Bird Areas (IBAs)
  • Develop site and national partnerships and networks ,build/improve infrastructure and centers of excellence for environmental education and decentralise activities
  • Establish coordination, integration and collaboration on environmental education programmes
  • Partner with industries, corporate and businesses to promote the integration of environmental education and conservation within corporate vision

Target audience 
The Conservation Environmental Education programme will cater for all age cohorts and socio-economic groups in the country to create awareness on resource management to a wide cross section of the society. The following groups will be targeted for environmental education;

  • School Children: to deliver environmental education programmes in our education sector including schools and tertiary institutions
  • The general public: To raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage members to participate in sound environmental initiatives to conserve the environment
  • Community groups/ Resource users: to create awareness on sustainable use of resources and promote voluntary self-help initiatives in the community to reduce dependence on the resource in use
  • Media: to use media to highlight environmental issues in both print and electronic for education purposes
  • Government: to educate government authorities on environmental issues to formulate and implement sound environmental policies to manage natural resources
