Located at Fort Jesus, a national monument and World Heritage Site on the waterfront of the Coastal Kenyan city of Mombasa, the Live Butterfly Exhibit will provide an experience of nature as an interesting supplement to enjoyment of history and culture at Fort Jesus and Old Town.
The butterfly house designed to blend well with the historic surroundings of the Fort will include a butterfly flight cage populated tropical with butterflies from all over the coastal region and even further afield as a reflection of the rich natural heritage of the Coast. It will be an important source of information about Coastal biodiversity. The Coastal forests of the region for example are part of the Eastern African Coastal Forest biodiversity hotspot- one of a select group of global eco-regions regarded as crucial for conservation. The Coastal forests also include a significant number of Important Bird Areas (IBAs).
The exhibit will provide information about key sites and how to visit them. A special feature of the exhibit is that the butterflies will be supplied by farmers living adjacent to key forest sites breeding them from parent stock obtained from the forests. In this way the display will be contributing to livelihoods of local communities and encouraging them to conserve their forests and heritage. At the gift shop you will be able to buy a whole range of community products including crafts, traditional herbs and other attractive mementos. On a stopover in Mombasa city en route to a beach or safari destination a visit to the butterfly house will be well worth it. The facility also includes an attractive garden with great views of the Nyali creek and Indian Ocean where visitors can enjoy a picnic or a restful interlude.
